Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
PCIT is an evidence-based therapy designed for parents/caregivers and their young children who are experiencing behavioral and/or emotional difficulties. It follows specific, step-by-step guidelines in each session.
The main focus of PCIT is changing negative parent/caregiver-child interaction patterns. The goal is to change negative behaviors and interactions into positive behaviors and interactions.
The parent, child and therapist each have a specific role in PCIT in order to most effectively benefit the parent and child in meeting the therapy goals.
Through this time limited therapeutic program, parents and children ages 2 – 7 improve the quality of their relationship, develop better parent-child interactions, and increase security in their relationship, while the caregivers develop skills to direct the child to increase positive behaviors and decrease negative behaviors through playful interactions and behavioral therapy techniques.
